There are many reasons to prune a tree. Pruning will promote vigor and health, maintain a safer tree and can increase the beauty of the tree.
Dead Wood Removal is the trimming of dead, dying, diseased, crowded, weakly attached and low-vigor branches from the crown of a tree.
Crown Thinning is the selective trimming of branches to increase light penetration and air movement through the crown. Thinning opens the foliage of a tree, reduces weight on heavy limbs and helps retain the trees natural shape.
Elevating is the trimming of lower branches from a tree in order to provide clearance for buildings, vehicles and pedestrians.
Crown Reduction reduces the size of a tree, often for clearance for utility lines, or to maintain a trees size in the urban landscape. Reducing the height or spread of a tree is best accomplished by pruning back the leaders and branch terminals to lateral branches that are large enough to assume the terminal roles (at least one-third the diameter of the cut stem). Compared to topping, reduction helps maintain the form and structural integrity of the tree.
Young Tree Pruning also known as developmental pruning is performed for structural enhancement. This important pruning helps to insure that new plantings have a desirable branch architecture and structural integrity. Proper pruning of young tees can reduce the potential of future storm damage and loss of valuable trees.
Topping Trees is not recommended – here is a link to a great article from the City of Boise to explain the harm and cost involved when trees are topped: https://parks.cityofboise.org/news/2011/05/city-forester-tree-topping-causes-damage/
